Collaborative Worldbuilding Assignment

 ⥺ Back to dashboard

Build a world considering place, physics, population & history, aesthetics and material culture.

Step 1: Moodboard

Together you should work on developing the place of this world and create a moodboard on Miro.com. Decide on the frame or scale of that world–it can be one of four things: a magical realm, a country, a small community, an institution. Collaboratively make a name for this place.

Step 2: Full World Presentation

Then one person each takes one part of the world to develop individually for next week. Together, work on a presentation the fully showcases your world.

  • Place / Physics: Diagram three components of how the physics of this world differ from our world. This should include one element of how the environment differs/is specific, one piece of technology, and one social rule that guides or controls bodies. Talk about the place and how the physics is embedded in it.

  • Population / Language & History / Myth: Write 300-400 word origin story for your world. It should justify why people have the roles they have. Then make a diagram or a chart or a list of the main roles people play in this world. You do not need to focus on language in this assignment, though you may if you wish.

  • Aesthetics and Material Culture: Design a sign, a worn item, and a component of the built world. These can be sketched by hand, created in Photoshop or Illustrator, collaged, or actually fabricated.

You may need to plan to meet again as a group before this is due in order to make sure each element is cohesive. Upload your materials to Google Drive before our next session. In the first week you should have moodboards addressing all the elements of worldbuilding. At the due date, the world should be completely built and ready to present.

You will have 5-10 minutes to present. It is up to you how you want to present your world (most people have done slide decks, as long as you can upload the final presentation onto Google Drive), but ensure you address the characters and the conflicts you have discovered inherent to your world.
