The New Frame: A Day Of Innovative Experience Design

Planning your trip to New York in November

 ⥺ Back to dashboard

Our trip to New York is on the horizon, so we wanted to pass along some travel suggestions as well as the schedule for our final weekend together. I'm already getting emotional just thinking about it!

Friday, November 18:

  • 2 pm: Arrival activity in Manhattan

  • 4-6 pm: We recommend you grab an early dinner or bite somewhere nearby Gibney

  • 6-10 pm: Set up and installation of your work (your time needs will of course vary so no need to stay this late, but we can't stay past 10 pm)

  • 10 pm: Time to celebrate together, or rest up!

Saturday, November 19:

  • 10 am: Arrive at Gibney for final preparations and seeing each other’s projects

  • 11:30 am: Lunch (provided by OW)

  • 12-5 pm: The New Frame

  • 1 pm: Guest Critic walkthrough

  • 5-6 pm: Cocktail hour

  • 7 pm: Celebratory dinner (provided by OW)

  • 9:30 pm: Celebrations continue as you please

Sunday, November 20:

  • 10-11:30 am: Culminating Ceremony

  • 11:30 -12:30 pm: Lunch at Gibney (provided by OW)

  • 12:30-2 pm: Deinstall and strike Gibney

*An optional Sunday evening activity will be planned by Victor for anyone staying the night in NYC

We will be at 280 Broadway at Gibney in Studio Y (check out pictures and a video of the space here! know that the windows do open and the space gets filled with light) most of the time aside from a few meals out. They require all people entering their spaces to provide proof of vaccination through this form. They check that at the door so we recommend you do it now to get it out of the way. Gibney's policy on COVID is here if you want more detail (though it is subject to change).

Gibney is in downtown Manhattan, right near the Brooklyn Bridge. We recommend that you stay in Manhattan or Brooklyn for ease of transit. While I've never stayed at Aloft, in a previous life I was a co-owner of a B&B in Brooklyn and we recommended it to folks when we were full. It's in downtown Brooklyn, a few minutes by train just across the water, and close to a lot of transit. If you're looking for something hip and in Manhattan The Standard or ACE Hotel are great, if a bit more of a splurge. Airbnbs are also of course an option--in BK I recommend staying in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Fort Green, Prospect Heights, Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights. All are all relatively safe, walkable, and will have all sorts of great places to eat and explore; South Brooklyn will have more direct transit options. If you have other questions, I lived in NYC for almost a decade so send 'em my way or ask your cohort mates who make the city their home. And watch the #NYC channel in our server for more discussion of where to stay.

More details on The New Frame

The event will be open from 12-5 pm with a cocktail hour from 5-6 pm. Live Performances will occur from roughly 2-3 though we need to confirm the duration of your pieces to solidify these slots. Guest critics will arrive at noon to see your work. We will give closing remarks about the program to close up and move towards cocktail hour. Tickets will be spread over 2 slots from 12-3 and 2-5 pm. Each of you will be getting three guaranteed guest tickets. The rest are open to the public.

When people arrive there will be a small reception area that will have programs and a sign-up sheet with one sentence descriptions of your projects. Based on the duration of your respective experiences, you will have a set number of slots available for the day. During the day, you each will be given roughly an hour-long break to go visit each other’s booths (yes, you need breaks!).

The event will be masked because Gibney requires masks for all audience members at events. When we are speaking publicly or if you are performing live, you may take off your mask (short periods only). If you have an element of your performance that works best with you or your audience unmasked, you may do so briefly as long as you get consent from all those participating at your booth. You will be allowed to leave items in the space overnight on Friday and Saturday.

A few reminders on our COVID Policy

Given that Abe will have a new baby and my partner has cancer, this weekend will be masked except when eating or drinking all together. Each of you needs to do an at home COVID-19 antigen test and share your negative results with us before Saturday at 10 am. P lease note that Gibney requires all visitors to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19. You can do this before your arrival by completing this form. All visitors at The New Frame will also be required to mask per Gibney's policy; learn more about their policies on their website. When we are speaking publicly or if you are performing live, you may take off your mask (short periods only). If you have an element of your piece that works best with you or your audience unmasked, you may do so briefly as long as you get consent from all those participating at your booth.
