Pick one of the fundamental elements of worldbuilding (Place/Physics, Aesthetics/Material Culture, Population/Language, History/Myth), and design an intervention in the medical world to make it experientially better.

You might start by thinking about an experience at a specialist’s office where they didn’t believe your symptoms, or your GP never once looked you in the eye just took notes on a computer, at the ER the doctor incorrectly noted your gender, or perhaps the experience of being on the phone trying to transfer your medical records. Would you change the uniform nurses wear, the spatial qualities of a waiting room, the formatting of the technology that keeps medical records, the institutional procedures and mechanisms for billing?

How could the worldbuilding of the medical institution in your country be altered to better your experience? What hacks, small or big, would make you feel more cared for? How specific are these hacks to your needs, and how might they affect others for better or worse?

You have options for the form this can take.

  1. Write a 500+ word description of your intervention. Think about the cause and effect of this particular element of worldbuilding. Describe the intervention and the results in detail. Does it impact other elements of worldbuilding and how?

  2. Create a visual sketch, or diagram of your intervention. Make 2-3 images that convey how this alteration in the world (before & after) operates for patients. This can be mockups, moodboards, drawings, or architectural layouts.

  3. Make some alternative form that communicates your designed intervention. It could be a deck, a short VR experience, a podcast, a poem, a monument, a short video, an interactive website.
